From the beginning of ONUplus, there was a clear goal: reach young adults who aren’t necessarily planning on a college campus experience, or who maybe haven’t been preparing for it. We’re navigating a new and, admittedly, challenging space. But, if anything, these challenges underscore just how essential ONUplus is. We’re stepping into the gap; not only to offer education but to foster connections between young adults and churches in a season of life where both can feel distant.
A Growing Disconnect: Why New Approaches Are Needed
It’s no secret that more and more young adults are choosing different paths, often stepping away from both higher education and regular church involvement. Many pastors express frustration, asking, How do we care for young adults who seem to be moving in a different direction? We’re also aware that it’s not just a lack of interest;there are practical and often personal barriers keeping young people from seeing college or church as relevant or accessible.
This disconnect is exactly why ONUplus exists. We’re here to meet young adults where they are. And our mission goes beyond academics; we want to help young people connect with faith communities where they can belong, explore, and grow in this unique season of their lives.
Listening, Learning, and Adapting
ONUplus was never intended to be a “set it and forget it” program. From day one, we knew this journey would require listening, learning, and consistently adapting to the needs of the students and communities we serve. Our church partners, site directors, and students have become essential voices in guiding and shaping the program’s growth. They’re helping us understand what resonates, what misses the mark, and what genuinely makes a difference.
For instance, conversations with church leaders have been invaluable, giving us insight into what young adults in their communities are looking for, what their pain points are, and why they’re often hesitant to engage with a college education. These lessons are helping us create real connections that address educational goals and a spiritual hunger that might have gone unacknowledged.
Embracing the Challenge
I won’t sugarcoat it; his work is more challenging than many expected. But challenging doesn’t mean bad. Every obstacle we face only serves to reinforce why this work is needed. Reaching young adults who aren’t actively looking for college or a deeper connection to church might seem ambitious, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. We’re here to show them that their future isn’t limited, and that they can explore paths that are meaningful, attainable, and relevant to their lives.
And this isn’t about simply “getting more students.” It’s about showing young adults that they’re valued, seen, and worthy of an education model that speaks to their circumstances. ONUplus is rooted in the belief that when education and community come together, transformation happens.
Moving Forward Together: Building Something That Lasts
ONUplus isn’t a finished product. It’s a dynamic, growing program that will continue evolving as we listen and adapt. With every new partnership, every story we hear, and every community connection, we learn something that makes us better. Our aim is to create a sustainable impact that lifts up everyone involved; from the pastors rediscovering ways to reach young adults, to the students finding their footing and their future.
In a world full of uncertainty, ONUplus is here to offer young adults more than just classes. We’re offering them a chance to be part of something meaningful, to find a community that values who they are and who they’re becoming. It’s a big mission, but we’re up for it;and we’re only getting started.
